The short answer is: it's a mix of history and adaptability.Chardonnayisthewhite wine grape of Burgundy, and while that definitely carries a large cultural cachet on its own, of course Chardonnay is known the world over, andthatis because it can grow in a variety of terroirs and showcase a variety of profiles. Let's look at some exemplary bottles that Maison Brondeau is proud to carry:
Burgundy
2022 Domaine de Montille, Bourgogne Blancrepresents the greater Cote d'Or, with just a bit of new oak to balance the fresh, citrussy expression of Chardonnay.
Chablis, the northernmost area of Burgundy, is famous for its dry, mineral-driven Chardonnay. Try the2022 Domaine Costal, Chablis ‘Vaillons’ 1er Crufor an excellent representation.
If you want to try a California Chard that hassomeoak, but not an overbearing amount, try the2023 Au Bon Climat Chardonnay. It's a great bottle to see if a creamier texture, with just a little butter, is your style.
In Sonoma, the2022 Ceritas, Chardonnay ‘Zephyr’ Sonoma Coastis pairing coastal influence with delicious richness in this single-vineyard bottling. Think of enjoying a slice of lemon meringue at a beach picnic.
While the Piedmont is more famous for producing large, structured reds, the2024 Maffrei Langhe Chardonnayshowcases beautiful minerality and purity of fruit.
Here's an interesting comparison:the 2022 Hamilton Russell Vineyards Chardonnayhas a similar vinification regimen to the Ceritas above, but Hemel-en-Aarde is pretty distinct from Sonoma. See what a difference terroir can make with this South African Chard.
Just how Burgundy does Pinot Noir next to Chardonnay, so does Oregon in the Willamette Valley. The2022 Big Table Farm, The Wild Bee Chardonnaybrings some toasty notes along with ripe golden fruit for a well-rounded, rustic sense of the grape.
Chardonnay is sometimes called "the winemaker's grape," because it's such a great-but-neutral grape that, depending on what you do to it in the winery, it can present any number of different notes. Aging in oak is a key decision, but so is aging on the lees, controlling the process of malolactic fermentation, fining and/or filtering... there are a thousand adjustments that a winemaker can make to achieve the style that he wants, and Chardonnay is an excellent medium to work in.
We hope that this short list gives you some ideas for finding the rightChardonnayfor you!
