Poppy is basically Maison Brondeau’s go-to California producer for Cab, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir at a great price. Started by the Silva family in 2003 in Monterey wine country, they only produce these three varietals, and only from five different vineyards. Compare these to other California wines around the same price, and you’ll see why we carry all three:
Handcrafted from their own family-owned vineyard in Paso Robles, the 2021 Poppy Cabernet Sauvignon brims with juicy blueberries, ripe black cherries, and rich currants. Aged 18 months in American and French oak, it’s laced with smooth vanilla, decadent mocha, and a hint of spiced jam. Silky tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, seamless finish make this vintage perfect for pairing with roasted lamb, braised short ribs or for stealing the show all on its own.
Lush and approachable, the 2020 Poppy Chardonnay features ripe pineapple, pear, and golden apple layered with vanilla and a touch of toasted oak. A smooth, creamy texture is balanced by fresh acidity, creating a satisfying and easy-drinking finish.
The grapes for the 2023 Poppy Pinot Noir are grown in a variety of acclaimed micro appellations located in the cool climate of Monterey County. The vibrant aromas of raspberries with notes of strawberries, fermented cherries and a touch of macerated plum and mocha toast invite the senses into this enjoyable Pinot Noir. Pair this wine with a slow roasted lamb shank seasoned with rosemary and orange zest.
Suffice it to say, Poppy makes emblematic California wines of consistent quality. These wines own a truck and will help you move. They’ll dogsit for you. They are friendly and dependable, and always a good glass, so try them out the next time you’re shopping for a sure thing.
